Unique staycation at the Radio Hotel in Washington Heights

It’s officially holiday season in New York City, and there is no shortage of activities to enjoy around town. From free tree lightings to holiday shows, there is something for everyone and all budgets. One fun idea that we like to do every year is plan a fun staycation right in Manhattan. And if you’ve been following Bronxmama for some time now, you know the Radio Hotel in Washington Heights has become one of our favorite hotels for a much needed staycation. Not to mention, we love grabbing a bite to eat downstairs at Jalao- a Dominican restaurant straight out of Santo Domingo.

The rooms are modern, each with playful pops of color that continue into the bathroom. The suites have the perfect amount of space to hang out and enjoy, but if you want to venture out, here are some places worth exploring:

Highbridge Water Tower: On select days, the NYC Parks Department rangers give tours of the famous Highbridge Water Tower, which offers amazing views of uptown and beyond. Learn more.

Word Up Community Bookshop: located near the Radio Hotel, this volunteer run bookstore also hosts events and art exhibits throughout the year. Learn more.

Morris-Jumel Mansion: one of the nation’s foremost historic house museums and Manhattan’s oldest surviving residence, visitors can see inside the mansion Thursdays through Sunday. Learn more.

Sylvan Terrace: Right by the Morris-Jumel Mansion is Sylvan Terrace, a cobblestone street lined with wooden row houses. This is one of the few remaining places in NYC you can find wood houses. Learn more.

Of course, no stay at the Radio Hotel is complete without heading downstairs to Jalao. We met up with friends and enjoyed some appetizers on their all new brunch menu, and took advantage of the bottomless Sangria.

This time we stayed in a King suite overlooking part of Highbridge Park. If you have the chance to book a bridge view room, those are our favorite. And be sure to check out the website for current deals. There is currently a Bed & Breakfast package, advance purchase deals, and their Autumn special is still running through December 21.
