Since October 2017, Boogie Down Books®, a bookstore-without-walls for kids, teens, families, and educators in the Bronx, has hosted Fall Into Reading, an annual celebration of youth and community literacy including the distribution of hundreds of free books to children and teens in the Bronx. After hosting a more intimate version of the event during the summer of 2020 amidst the pandemic, this year Boogie Down Books is partnering with Mott Haven’s Maria Sola Community Greenspace, Drag Queen Story Hour, and Made For Me Books, a non-profit Harlem-based book distribution organization, to give away books to local children and teens. This year’s fifth annual edition of the event has been reimagined as Spring Into Reading so that young readers have books they’re excited to read as the school year ends and summer vacation begins. Contributions from more than 40 individual donors from the community have made this year’s giveaway event possible, and teen volunteers from Central Park East High School will staff the event.
Because this year’s book giveaway is on June 19, the event will commemorate Juneteenth with a reading by Harmonica Sunbeam of Drag Queen Story Hour of the modern classic children’s book Juneteenth for Mazie, a family movement class led by local yoga teacher Jasmine Cintron, and a community mural project led by local artist and activist Sydney Can Guzman. All children and teens who attend Spring Into Reading will receive at least two free books of their choice from a selection of more than sixty-five different titles honoring the history of Juneteenth, celebrating BIPOC voices, and featuring activists past and present who are changing the world. To promote summer reading, Boogie Down Books is also hosting a summer reading challenge so that families can acquire additional books by reading throughout the summer.
