If you are a fan of soccer, you definitely would have known about the Champions League Final last week, but have you heard of the South Bronx United soccer program? The SBU Academy uses travel soccer as the force behind providing kids from middle school to high school seniors with academic enrichment, tutoring, mentoring, and a path to graduating high school and going on to college.
As of June 1st 2021, SBU kicked off their annual fundraising campaign featuring 11 model student athletes and their stories of resilience and perseverance. SBU’s goal is to raise $150,000 in 11 days to level the playing field for their student athletes. The stories will be shared on the campaign’s podcast- #Powerof11, available on Apple, Spotify, and Soundcloud.
On day 1, the league highlighted Jennifer Oliveros, who joined SBU in 2015 and plays the left winger position. She is now class of 2025 at NYU.
“Ultimately, those difficult moments, those hard months made me a better, stronger, and more understanding person who can get herself through demanding situations and get others through, as well.”
— Jennifer Oliveros, SBU Academy Class of 2021.
