When we think of the U.S Census, we often envision people going door-to-door, gathering household information. But with today’s technology and a current pandemic, the 2020 Census looks a bit different this year. With a new deadline of September 30th, and only 56.1% of Bronxites counted as of the end of August, it’s so important we work together to be counted! The data collected from the Census affects federal funding (like SNAP, school lunches, and plans for highways!), and given the crazy year that we’ve had we can not afford to lose future funding. So we’ve teamed up with BronxWorks to get the word out and encourage everyone to do the same!
Did You Know?
In 2009, the Census Bureau found that more than $400 billion of federal funds were distributed using Census Bureau data (Blumerman, 2009). Here are a few programs and the amount of funds in 2015 that were allocated based on Census data:
National School Lunch Program: $18,915,944,292
Title 1 Grants to Local Educational Agencies: $14,253,154,251
Unemployment Insurance: $3,015,880,910
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children: $6,062,899,861
And much much more!
Other Facts:
- It’s quick and easy. The 2020 Census questionnaire will take about 10 minutes to complete.
- It’s safe, secure, and confidential. Your information and privacy are protected.
- Your response helps to direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services.
- Results from the 2020 Census will be used to determine the number of seats each state has in Congress and your political representation at all levels of government.
So if you haven’t completed the Census yet, please take 10 minutes now to complete at www.my2020census.gov. If you already have and want to help spread the word, please share this post with your friends and family!
