Choosing the Right Eyewear For Your Child

As part of our Children’s Eye Health series with local optical chain Metro Optics, we recently shared their list of Top 5 Ways to Foster Your Kids’ Vision & Eye Health. Now, we’re teaming up to bring you some important information on choosing the right eyewear for your child.

Polycarbonate or Trivex Lenses

Polycarbonate lenses help protect your child’s vision by holding up to rough-and-tumble play or sports without cracking or shattering. Poly also offers other benefits: the material is lighter than standard plastic or glass, which makes eyeglasses with polycarbonate lenses more comfortable to wear and less likely to slide down your child’s nose.

Like poly, lenses made of Trivex are thin, lightweight and much more impact-resistant than regular plastic or glass lenses. Trivex lenses have the advantage of crisper optics than polycarbonate lenses. Both poly and Trivex also offer 100% UV protection.

Now through 10/1/19, save 50%* on your safety lens upgrade from polycarbonate to Trivex. Trivex offers the same certified shatter-resistance and 100% UV protection as polycarbonate, but it’s lighter on your face and offers better optics with less distortion.

Styles: Shapes & Colors

Each Metro Optics location has a wide great selection of children’s frames and staff that are happy to help you find the perfect pair of glasses for your child. The top shapes to choose from square and rectangular, with rounded styles becoming more popular in recent years (the Harry Potter effect, perhaps?)

There has been a rise in the popularity of unisex green shades, along with various blue tones (also a top pick of parents!) Classic black, brown and grey are always available, some with brighter accent colors like red and orange. And of course, they’ve got pinks and purples for an all-over pop of color.

Speaking of color: Did you know that Metro Optics compiled a coloring book with eye care, eyewear and Bronx-themed coloring pages created by local Bronx artists? Pick up a free copy at any location, where crayons and colored pencils are available for your child to enjoy during your visit!

Eyewear & Sports

Children need to wear proper eyewear when participating in sports. Did you know that 90% of sports-related eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear? Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States and most injuries occurring in school-aged children are sports-related. So be sure to ask about the sports eyewear options for your little athlete.

Metro Optics offers ASTM certified sports goggles for baseball, basketball, and soccer, along with other safety frames by popular brands such as Oakley and WileyX, which – when paired with shatter-resistant polycarbonate or Trivex – will ensure that your child’s eyes are protected during play and competition. For outdoor sports, consider a light-adaptive (Transitions) safety lens, which darkens in the sunlight for comfortable vision in changing light conditions (in addition to 100% UV protection).

Anti-Glare Lenses

Let’s face it, as much as we try to keep the kids off screens, it’s inevitable that they will partake in too much screen time here and there. Blue-defense anti-glare lenses filter out eye-straining blue light from digital devices and eliminate annoying lens reflections, allowing for greater visual comfort and clarity especially during prolonged use of computers, tablets and smartphones. These lenses and are great for all ages- especially as we move into colder weather months with fewer daylight hours and spend more time inside using devices.. Metro Optics offers……

Now through 10/15/19, take $50.00 off* blue-defense anti-glare lenses and $50.00 off computer progressive lenses (for the parents).
