Dino lovers get ready! Dinosaur Safari- the biggest, most realistic dinosaur ride in America, will open this April at the Bronx Zoo. See below for the full details:
About Dinosaur Safari
The immersive experience will take adventurers on a ride through a two-acre wooded area of the Bronx Zoo where 40 ultra-realistic, life-sized animatronic dinosaurs lurk Featured dinosaur species include two massive 40 foot long Tyrannosaurus rex , a favorite species in popular culture that was the apex predator in its time; the lesser-known Omeisaurus, a herbivore that spans more than 60 feet head-to-tail and towers over the safari trail; and the Spinosaurus, which was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs ever to roam the Earth.
To ensure that each species’ motions, vocalizations, and appearance are represented accurately, the Bronx Zoo consulted with Carl Mehling, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History, and “Dino” Don Lessem, a dinosaur expert who has authored dozens of popular science books and served as an advisor on the production of the original Jurassic Park film.
The narrated ride and a Dinosaur Safari Field Guide will showcase each species and illustrate some of the physical and behavioral adaptations utilized by many dinosaurs and modern-day wildlife. “The Dinosaur Safari experience is twice the size of past Bronx Zoo dinosaur exhibits,” said Jim Breheny, Bronx Zoo Director and WCS Executive Vice President of Zoos and Aquarium. “Our visitors have loved experiencing these gigantic animatronic dinosaurs up close. It’s a thrilling experience and a learning one, too. Both dinosaurs and wildlife today developed adaptations that help them survive in their native habitats. This experience highlights some of those adaptive behaviors and characteristics.”
The ride concludes with an ADA-accessible fossil dig area for families; photo opportunities; and dinosaur-themed activities throughout the zoo.
The 40 fife-size animatronic dinosaurs will Inhabit more than 2 acres and officially opens on April 19th, with WCS Members receiving early access April 13th through the 18th.
