Bronx River Art Center Summer Classes Start July 16th

 

Summer classes at the Bronx River Art Center begin on July 16th- there is still time to register. See below for more information.

KIDS (ages: 6 to 9)
MONDAYS: July 16, 23, 30, August 6, & 13 / $55
11am-1pm
Painting your Favorite Sport with Joel Adas/Ana Ruiz
Participants will talk about sports and go over some examples of how sports have been depicted in art. Students will then create a mixed media collage using a variety of materials depicting their favorite sport. The option will be then to do a self-portrait painting playing their favorite sport.

TUESDAYS July 17, 24, 31, August 7, & 14 / $55

Ceramics Class with Matthew Burcaw
In this ceramics class, students will experience numerous techniques for working with clay. Each student will learn how to make pinch pots, hand build with slabs, slump, sculpt, and work on the pottery wheel. Through these explorations, students discover what area of ceramics they want to focus on to create a final project; and learn about the various glazes they can use to finish their work. This is a good chance to get messy with a purpose.

Cartooning with Devon Purkiss
Students are given the opportunity to create (write & draw) a short story from their own imagination. Over the 5-week course, we will cover some basic drawing techniques, design our very own characters and start them off on their own adventure!

Drawing with Tiffany Miller
Students will experiment with basic tools such as colored pencils, graphite, pen and pastel on various kinds of paper. Participants will develop a drawing practice that inspires them to think of drawing as an exciting art form that can help them relax, focus, plan, invent, expand their imagination, solve problems and express their personal style and point of view.

TWEENS (ages:10 to 13)

MONDAYS July 16, 23, 30, August 6, & 13 / $55

Drawing and Printing on Handmade Paper with Michele Brody
During this class, students will learn how to make their own handmade papers from such materials as junk mail, old blue jeans, and plants. Students will design their own logo to hand print onto unique sheets of stationery to give as gifts, as well as collages and drawings of fine art for our final exhibition.

Color & Abstract Painting with Diane Davis
This session is an introduction to color theory and abstract painting. Using primary colors and black & white students will develop a personalized color line, referencing a still life setup for an abstract painting.

Sculpture with Ana Ruiz
During this 3D class students will explore the art of making sculptures through interacting with our environment. Students will learn how to assemble and glue natural and manmade found objects to create sculptural art work inspired by the community surrounding BRAC. Students will interact with the The Bronx River, neighborhood gardens and parks in order to transform these sites into places of creativity.

Ceramic Sculpture with Jennifer Tomaiolo
This class will focus on mosaic and ceramic tile-making. Students will learn about the artistic possibilities of stone, glass and ceramic tiles. Lessons will include how to design and layout stone or glass tile mosaic, culminating in the student’s creation of a unique, handmade ceramic tile.
TEEN PROJECT STUDIO (TPS) SUMMER 2018
Free Program for Ages 14-19!
Teens! Join us as the Bronx River Art Center leads an interdisciplinary art and design program with weekly field-trip adventures throughout the Bronx and New York City. We’ll visit museums and other arts destinations. Our goal is to broaden access to the arts and provide free access to culture across all five boroughs.
Classes will run from 2pm to 4pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with field trip days going from 1pm to 5pm. It’s free to participate but you must register!
