Holiday Fun: Things to do in the Bronx for the Holidays

Tis the season! Although we hate the cold, the holidays seem to warm everything up! We’ve compiled a list of Holiday Happenings in the Bronx- keep checking back as we continue to add more events to the list.

Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden

NOV. 21 2015—JAN. 18 2016

Enchanting model trains zip through a display of 150 landmarks, each re-created with bark, leaves, and other natural materials—all under the twinkling glow of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Marvel at G-scale locomotives humming along among familiar sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and Rockefeller Center—surprising at every turn—on nearly a half-mile of track. This year’s exhibition features3,000 square feet of additional exhibition space, making room for dozens of new trains, bridges, and tracks; a captivating short film of the show’s behind-the-scenes magic; and a stunning multisensory finale of light and sound. www.nybg.org

You can also enjoy the train show during a date night for NYBG’s Bar Car Nights- an after hours viewing of the show complete with ice sculpture carving demonstrations, a complimentary drink, and more. www.nybg.org

A Storybook Christmas at Bartow Pell Mansion Museum

December 4 – January 6
Delight in Christmas trees throughout the mansion inspired by children’s storybooks about Christmas in New York and decorated by professional designers.
On view early enough to see again and again and long enough to enjoy after the holiday rush, the Storybook Christmas trees set the stage for a season to remember from the moment the mansion doors swing open on Friday, December 4th for the Holiday Luncheon and book signing with special guest Michael Storrings. That evening the merriment continues with the Holiday First Friday! Music & Trolley featuring the festive sounds of the all-female, a cappella MetropoliTones.Throughout it all, visitors can shop for gifts and books in the museum’s holiday pop-up shop (stocked, once again, with the help of Bronxville’s Kensington Paper), and purchase homemade holiday delicacies to take home. Holiday fun continues the next day at the Annual Holiday Family Day, Saturday, December 5th. A highlight of this year’s Family Day is a special author appearance by Sonia Manzano, “Maria” of Sesame Street fame, who will read and sign copies of her new children’s book, Miracle on 133rd Street (Simon and Schuster, September 2015) at the 10:15 a.m. storybook reading. At Saturday night’s Festive Party, guests celebrate the season in style—and support the museum—with the mansion in all its holiday splendor. A live and silent auction featuring vacation homes; one-of-a-kind New York experiences including tickets to Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Nutcracker; a very special winter dinner at the mansion, plus themed raffle baskets, and more ensures the festive feeling will linger on well into the New Year.A list of the Storybook Christmas trees, the books that inspired them, and the designers that bring them to life follows. All books will be available for sale in the museum shop. Please call 718.885.1461 or visit www.bpmm.org
The museum will be open for additional public hours to view the Storybook Christmas trees Tuesday, December 29, through Thursday, December 31, 12 to 4 p.m.

Bronx Caroling: Melrose Parranda

December 21st, 4 to 6pm

The Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC) will inaugurate its annual Melrose procession series this year with a focus on the Puerto Rican tradition of caroling called parranda. Each year we will focus on a particular processional tradition, whether it is Puerto Rican parrandas, Mexicanposadas, English wassailing or Jamaican Jonkunnu.

This year on Monday, December 21st, at 4:00 pm, a parranda playing the Puerto Rican music ofplena and singing holiday songs from the island will be led by Jorge Vazquez, Bobby Sanabria and others. Join the procession at the Bronx Documentary Center (614 Cortland Ave) as we wind our way through Melrose into beloved local landmarks, ending with a jubilant jam session and refreshments at Casita Rincón Criollo (Brook Ave and 157th St).

This BMHC event will be co-sponsored Make Music New York by City Lore.
