Bronx Crime and Noir Writers─Writing the First Scene
with Bronx Writers Center Director Charlie Vázquez
You have a point-of-view character and a story in mind. A world to throw him or her into. The first chapter of a novel or novella—or the opening scene of a short story—must grab a reader’s attention to keep them reading. How do professional writers achieve this? Find out at this crime and noir fiction workshop devoted entirely to launching your tale and anchoring your readers in the suspense-driven DNA of your story world: the what, when, where, how, why and who.

Can we choose our own? We will explore through journal writing, vignettes, drawing and topic-oriented testimonies how in global communities such as New York City, and The Bronx in particular, the notion of identity is often challenged by its own denizens and the body of politics…more on this soon! From Memory to Poetry with BRIO winner Paul Bulman
Poetry can be a powerful way to capture memories and tell a personal narrative. Join Pinny Bulman for a selected reading of poems from his “old shul” series which incorporate memories, experiences and imageries from his childhood in pre-gentrified Washington Heights, New York City. Participants will have an opportunity to create and share memory-based poetry in a supportive atmosphere, following the reading. Pinny has been the recipient of several poetry awards (BRIO 2014, ADR Poetry Award 2013) and his poems have appeared in a variety of literary publications, including Red Paint Hill, Poetica, The Subterranean Quarterly, Poetry Quarterly and Mima’amakim.
