On one August evening in the 1970’s New York gave birth to a sound that would change the face of Latin music forever. At the renown Cheetah Nightclub, there was an ensemble of artists got together for what became a magical evening of music. The show was billed as “Our Latin Thing”. In the decades ahead those all-star musicians would become the ambassadors and juggernauts of Latin Music around the world. They became the musical reflection of the times, needs, and struggles of New York’s Latino community. Their music was “Salsa Gorda,” influenced by American Jazz, Soul, and Rock and Roll. Ismael Miranda aka “El niño bonito de la Salsa” (The pretty boy of Salsa) always wanted to be a musician, and by age 11 had already formed two groups: “The 4J’s and Little Junior” and “The Class Mates.” He sang and played conga for the group and they were good enough to appear on Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Miranda also grew up and played in his first bands with Jazz percussionist Orlando “Q” Rodríguez and piano player Mark Diamond. In 1967, when Miranda was 17 years old, he made his recording debut and made such an impression on bandleader Larry Harlow, that he was hired as Larry’s lead singer. …

Carlos Enrique Estremera Colón is a Puerto Rican Salsa singer from San Juan, nicknamed “El Cano” (“The Light-Colored Haired One”), due to his albinism. Estremera developed his talent as a singer while residing in a public housing complex in the area of Santurce, and acknowledges Puerto Rican jíbaro country singers as a strong influence. He developed a reputation for being a fast and clever improviser, in the same vein as Marvin Santiago, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and other salsa singers who could improvise dozens of soneos on the spot. …
