Have you ever visited The Bronx Zoo in the wintertime? If not, here are a few reasons you should:
1. The cold weather draws less crowds in the winter, giving you and your family a front row seat to the animals.
2. It’s great to explore nature and the animals in their winter habitats. With the help of a zoo membership, spending an hour or so walking around the zoo on weekend mornings is a great way to get some fresh air and explore.
3. Ice Carving Week! Timed perfectly with NYC school’s holiday vacation each year, Salute to Wildlife gives families the chance to learn the artistry of ice sculpture while learning about a significant region of the world where WCS works. This year’s theme will be Tropics on Ice, which will highlight the Amazon Rainforest region!
About Ice Carving Week
From December 26th to December 31st, Tropics on Ice will feature carvings that focus on the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. This awesome event will offer visitors of all ages the chance to experience the art of ice sculpting as well as learn about this amazing region, which the Wildlife Conservation Society is working hard to protect.
The ice sculptures will depict the flora of the rainforest as well as the animals, including pink dolphins, anacondas, giant otters, and more!
Carvers will also create an interactive winter wonderland! Complete with a 25 foot slide, Amazon themed ice landscapes for pictures, and even interactive ice games!
There will also be plenty of crafts and special performances as well.
About The Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon is considered the largest tropical forest in the world- where at least 10% of the world’s biodiversity resides. Despite having the largest complex of tropical rainforests anywhere, land is still being deforested and habitats and wildlife are being put at risk.
Check out some of the features we are super excited about:
Salute to Wildlife Ice Carving Competition: Sunday, 12/28
Ice Carvers from around the east coast will compete in an ice carving contest. Contestants will be creating their best sculptures of the wildlife from the Amazon Rainforest! The crowd gets to vote on their favorites!
Tropics Environment Ice Play Area:
Children finally get to live out what they see in the movies- a slide made of ice, a playground on ice, and a throne!
Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas 4-D, 12/5 to 1/9
The 4-D shows are always a hit at the Bronx Zoo, and Ice Age goes perfectly with this time of year, as well as this event! Take a trip to the North Pole with Sid and help save Christmas!
