From Doug Israel, Director of Research and Policy:
“This week the State Education Commissioner approved the Mayor’s appointment of Cathleen Black, chairwoman of Hearst Magazines, to be the next New York City schools chancellor. Although little is known about the approach Ms. Black will take to leading the school system, we believe the passing of the torch to the incoming chancellor presents an opportunity to reestablish some core educational priorities for the school system.”
Sign the petition to incoming Schools Chancellor Cathie Black and join the growing list of New Yorkers who believe that all students should receive a quality arts education.
Arts education is an essential element of every child’s education. Yet, unfortunately hundreds of thousands of New York City public school students are not receiving the instruction to which they are entitled under state law.
As you develop priorities for your tenure as Chancellor, we urge you to make a commitment to providing all New York City public school students with a well-rounded education, which includes the arts.
Ensuring that all city public schools are providing students with the minimum state requirements for arts instruction would be a welcome first step in that direction. SIGN IT HERE.
