Costume Swap and more! October 30th

NOTE: This is outside of the Bronx, but BronxMama wanted to share!

Putting an earth-friendly twist on Halloween Eve, families will be treated to a free afternoon of green-themed holiday festivities at the World Financial Center’s Screamin’ Green Halloween on Saturday, October 30th. Adorned with giant, 30-foot high figures of a scarecrow, witch, and skeleton, the spectacular Winter Garden will be the setting for a fun-filled afternoon featuring everything from games and parades to costume-making and costume swaps. Artists will be on hand to help kids make masks and costumes out of funky recycled and repurposed materials, providing them with a valuable lesson in creative reuse. During the costume swap, families can exchange last year’s costumes for gently used and ready-to-wear ones with plenty of time for the next day’s trick-or-treating.

The thrills and chills continue with a variety of fun games whose players will all be rewarded with fair trade and organic treats, and temporary tattoos of pumpkins and ghosts – printed on recycled paper, of course. Games include:

  • “Bobbing for Apples” – in a new twist on an old favorite, kids of all ages attempt to snare apples hanging from above without using their hands – harder than it sounds!
  • “Bowling for Ghosts” – participants roll balls down a homemade bowling alley towards repurposed soda bottles, craftily remade into ghosts of all shapes and sizes.
  • “Toss a Spider in the Brew” – each player gets three chances to toss a spider beanbag into a cauldron made from an old tire.

Mini-parades will take place throughout the World Financial Center including the waterfront (if weather permits) at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm, led by the legendary Hungry March Band. The day will culminate with a Ghosts and Goblins Parade to Poets House for a reading of spooky poems and seasonal snacks.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to have a fun-filled afternoon and learn a few earthly-friendly lessons in the process,” said Debra Simon, Executive Director of Arts World Financial Center. “The costume swap will be especially fun for kids, as it highlights first-hand the old axiom that one kid’s trash can be another’s treasure.”

The World Financial Center Shops & Restaurants will offer Screamin’ Green Halloween specials and sales throughout the afternoon. Visit www.worldfinancialcenter.com for details!

Free valet bicycle parking will be provided by Transportation Alternatives.
